Bennington Museum opens their annual winter show of regional artists, this year inspired by Vermont stones and minerals — paintings and photographs of quarries, sculptures made from Vermont rocks, jewelry incorporating Vermont gems and non-precious stones and work that deals with more abstract themes like explorations of geologic time.
The show gives a prelude to next year’s major summer/fall exhibition, Vermont Rocks!, which will explore the historical and cultural significance of Vermont’s mineral wealth. Vermont is the only state in the union with three official state rocks — granite, marble, and slate — and quarrying and mining have significantly affected the local landscape and economy.
The artwork also becomes a closed bid auction to benefit the artists and the museum.
