Auditory After Hours: LADAMA

April 3 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 7:00 pm on Saturday, repeating until April 17, 2021

Mass MoCA opens on a spring night for Auditory After Hours: a night out surrounded by 250,000 square feet of art and distance, with the music of LADAMA — Lara Klaus, Daniela Serna, Maria “Mafer Bandola” and Sara Lucas — four women from different countries and cultures of the Americas, who are sisters in song, rhythm and spirit.

Harnessing music from their respective countries of origin, Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela and the United States, the group utilizes traditional and non-traditional instruments from across the Americas but with a modern twist to produce Latin Alternative music.

An ensemble of women from across the Americas, LADAMA delivers a dynamic Pan-Latin blend for April’s Auditory After Hours. Repping Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela, with a dash of New York City thrown in, the band’s “irresistible spirit and universal appeal” knows no bounds (NPR). Prepare for an evening of rhythm and energetic song that’ll have you dancing through the galleries. (How long has it been since you shimmied outside your living room? Too long.)

Oye Mujer, LADAMA’s 2nd full-length album released in the Summer of 2020, is a declaration to women and a call to humanity. Working with renowned Brazilian producer Kassin (Jorge Ben, Bebel Gilberto, Caetano Veloso), in his studio in Rio de Janeiro, the four women of LADAMA created a collection of songs sung in Spanish, Portuguese and English that channel the personal experiences of being human in the midst of global crises, unprecedented climate destruction and immigration.

Each “Dama” takes a turn as lead singer as the others support her as instrumentalists and arrangers. Where the first record was based on organic, roots percussion and rhythm, this one is charged, visceral and electric, involving collaborations with Betsayda Machado (Venezuela), Spok (Brazil), Eliot Krimsky (New York) and others

Visitors can rotate in at 7, 7:30 and 8 p.m. Get tickets »

You can also choose to dive into the Auditory After Hours’ back catalogue and listen to
experimental hip-hop trio Clipping — Daveed Diggs, William Hutson, and Jonathan Snipes — and their underwater soundscape from December, or Sylvan Esso’s indie-pop soundtrack. Just talk with someone on staff when you arrive on the night, to listen to these past Auditory After Hours.
