Magnolias bloom at the Berkshire Botanical Garden in May.

Berkshire Botanical Garden holds their 45th Annual Plants and Answers spring plant sale on May 6 and 7. Curated by BBG’s horticulture staff, this year’s Plant Sale brings hundreds of perennials, annuals and vegetables with a focus on diversity and natural gardens that are exuberant and alive, out of the uniform and into something comfortable, and welcoming to birds, bees and butterflies.

“Ask Me” staff and volunteers will be on hand to provide expert advice. All proceeds from the Plant Sale support the Garden’s horticulture and education programs.

This year, BBG offers A Garden in Your Arms, a new community project in collaboration with two-thirds for the birds. They will offer site-specific plant lists from local designers including Deborah Munson, Page Dickey and Robert Reimer and more, created with pollinators in mind. BBG hopes to encourage the whole community to plant a Garden in Your Arms and share their progress on social media this summer by tagging BBG and using the hashtag #agardeninyourarms.

Traditionally held on Mother’s Day weekend, the Plants and Answers Plant Sale began in 1977 as BBG’s harbinger of spring for gardeners in the Berkshires and beyond with robust plants for landscape and container gardens, along with a wide selection of organic vegetable and herb plants and plants to attract bees, hummingbirds, butterflies, moths and other pollinators. The Garden’s cone-shaped hanging container arrangements will also be available.

Berkshire Botanical Garden is a COVID compliant facility and follows guidelines established by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The plant sale opens at 9 a.m. on Friday for members and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. for everyone and continues from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Admission and parking are free.

By the Way Berkshires is a digital magazine exploring creative life and community — art and performance, food and the outdoors — and I’m writing it for you, with local voices, because I’ve gotten to know this rich part of the world as a writer and journalist, and I want to share it with you.

If you’d like to see the website grow, you can join me for a few dollars a month, enough for a cup of coffee and a cider doughnut. Members get access to extra stories and multimedia, itineraries a bookmark tool. Let me know what you're looking for, and we’ll explore together.
