Potters will open their studios, welcoming all comers to meet the makers and learn about the craft in a free weekend with demonstrations and guest artists — in person and online.

Take a look inside seven very different working pottery studios — the self guided tour can make a loop beginning at any studio. You can find a Berkshire Pottery Tour map at the Berkshire Pottery Tour’s website and from each studio.

“For some the experience of holding a piece of pottery is made more precious by meeting the artist,” says artist Linda Skipper, “seeing where the work is made and gaining some understanding of the intricacies required to bring that piece to life.”

The Berkshire Pottery Tour was founded in 2013 by a group of pottery friends who met at the Berkshire Art Center (then IS183). Co-founders Paula Shalan, Dan Bellow, Ellen Grenadier, Linda Skipper and Ben Evans open their studios, as Lorimer Burns (a founding member) rejoins the Tour this year, and among the seven studios, nine guest potters will also bring their work, to create a wide variety of ceramic art, craft and ideas.

Connie Talbot, guest of Grenadier Pottery, will show and demonstrate flameware — tagines, casseroles, saute pans. Mariana Vasquez-Crede and Hunter Cody will share their passion for clay at the Berkshire Art Center and show the ceramic studio at the School. Sarah Hazelke shows hand painting of whimsical dishes as a guest of Lorimer Burns in Housatonic. Mark Rowntree, guest at Dan Bellow’s studio in Great Barrington, will bring kiln-glazed jars and vases fired in his wood kiln in Columbia county.

“We created the tour with the idea of bringing the community into our studios,” says Ben Evans, host studio and founding member of the Berkshire Pottery Tour. “It has an opportunity for everyone… ceramic enthusiasts, neighbors, community members, to come by and see what we’ve been up to, to see where we work. We’re very thankful for the Berkshires and the support of our community.”
