Mass MoCA will celebrate the opening of Ceramics in the Expanded Field, an exhibition bringing together the work of eight artists who are changing the way people think of clay. Artist Armando Guadalupe Cortés will give a performance at 6:30 p.m. in the galleries.

Ceramics in the Expanded Field brings together a group of eight artists whose ambitious works integrate ceramics—a medium that has long been siloed and marginalized—with disciplines ranging from photography and video to painting and performance. The show includes work by Nicole Cherubini, Armando Guadalupe Cortés, Francesca DiMattio, Jessica Jackson Hutchins, Kahlil Robert Irving, Anina Major, Rose B. Simpson and Linda Sormin.

While they push ceramics beyond its traditional functional forms, these artists simultaneously connect their work to the complex material and social histories of pottery as well as other crafts that lie outside usual fine art definitions, including basket-weaving, furniture design, building trades and lowrider culture.

Armando Guadalupe Cortés is an artist living and working in the industrial city of Wilmington, California. Originally from Urequío, a small farming community in Michoacán, México, Cortés draws inspiration from every aspect of his two vastly different worlds: sights, history, sounds, routines, smells, faiths, fables … He describes his work in two overlapping categories: the physical and the magical.

By the Way Berkshires is a digital magazine exploring creative life and community — art and performance, food and the outdoors — and I’m writing it for you, with local voices, because I’ve gotten to know this rich part of the world as a writer and journalist, and I want to share it with you.

If you’d like to see the website grow, you can join me for a few dollars a month, enough for a cup of coffee and a cider doughnut. Members get access to extra stories and multimedia, itineraries a bookmark tool. Let me know what you're looking for, and we’ll explore together.
