The Artist Book Foundation opens a new exhibit, Don Gummer: On the wall and in the air, honoring
the sculptor known for his layered geometric wall reliefs of painted wood and freestanding sculptures of stone, bronze, stainless steel, and glass.

TABF is publishing a new monograph on the sculptor and his acclaimed body of work, with essays by Peter Plagens, Linda Wolk-Simon, and John Yau, following the artist’s life and career and his attention to craftsmanship and detail. His body of work reflects a sense of harmony, they say, through a careful contrast of balance and proportion, allowing his often monumental works to seem almost buoyant.

Negative space becomes an intrinsic element in his work, imparting a sense that his exquisite, seemingly permanent forms are ultimately as fleeting as any of nature’s own creations would be.

Gummer’s works appear in many public collections, including Mass MoCA’s and the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio. He has earned recognition from the National Endowment for the Arts, and he was Visiting Artist at the American Academy in Rome. Some of his most recent sculptures appeared around Indianapolis in conjunction with his 2016 exhibition, Back Home Again.

The TABF gallery is in Building 13 in the Mass MoCA complex, and it is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays. It is always free, and all are welcome.

By the Way Berkshires is a digital magazine exploring creative life and community — art and performance, food and the outdoors — and I’m writing it for you, with local voices, because I’ve gotten to know this rich part of the world as a writer and journalist, and I want to share it with you.

If you’d like to see the website grow, you can join me for a few dollars a month, enough for a cup of coffee and a cider doughnut. Members get access to extra stories and multimedia, itineraries a bookmark tool. Let me know what you're looking for, and we’ll explore together.
