Seva and Kalyan Water at Nutwood Farm are inviting volunteers to help with their hazelnut harvest and maybe take some nuts home.

Hazelnuts are not yet for sale at the farm (in part because husking them is still a process by hand, though the farmers are exploring new collaborations with the New York Tree Crop Alliance to process their nuts over the winter.)

But this year, the farmers say, any pickers who are interested are welcome to take a grab bag of fresh hazelnuts home with them to try your hand at drying, husking and cracking your own nuts. You can join in at thest times, and the farmers ask people to sign up ahead of time:

Friday, September 8 — from 2 to 5 p.m.
Saturday, September 9 — from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 to 5 p.m.
Sunday, September 10 — from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The farm will hold a potluck lunch to share on both Saturday and Sunday, the farmers say. All ages and experience levels are welcome to help with the picking. Facilities are rustic, and the farmers recommend wearing good shoes and lightweight gloves – the nuts are sticky. “We’ll supply bags for picking and all the nut puns you can handle.”

“Nuts were once the traditional staple foods of the eastern woodlands, and we feel honored to be returning to these roots. We will lay out some of our small scale processing equipment so you can try your hand at this ancient foodway.”

Nutwood Farm is located on seven acres of hillside in Cummington, on land that was once stewarded by the Muh-he-con-neok (“People of the Waters that are never still”) or Mohican people, the Pocumtuk, Nonotuck, Nipmuc and Abenaki.

By the Way Berkshires is a digital magazine exploring creative life and community — art and performance, food and the outdoors — and I’m writing it for you, with local voices, because I’ve gotten to know this rich part of the world as a writer and journalist, and I want to share it with you.

If you’d like to see the website grow, you can join me for a few dollars a month, enough for a cup of coffee and a cider doughnut. Members get access to extra stories and multimedia, itineraries a bookmark tool. Let me know what you're looking for, and we’ll explore together.
