Helia Native Nursery invites visitors to Sky Meadow Farm for a popup plant sale on select dates during the growing season, opening on May 20 and 21. They will be open for plant purchases and pick ups on these dates, and they will host workshops and classes on many of them to explore nature through visual art, mind and body connection and wellness conservation and knowledge of the wild world.

The plant shop will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today, and Helia will offer two workshops — you will need to sign up in advance.

Shiitake mushroom logs — 9 to 10:30 a.m.

Discover the joy of mushroom gardening — in this hands-on workshop the group will gain insights about the lifecycle of Lentinula edodes, better known as the Shiitake mushroom, and its relationship with the log. They will also learn how to care for their log over the next few months as the mycelium works to colonize the log and produce its fruiting body, the mushroom. All supplies will be provided, and you can take home your log and enjoy the fruits of your labor for years to come.

Birds and Bees: Real Talk on Native Plant Pollination — 11 a.m. to noon

Who are our native pollinators? What are their life cycles? What plants do they feed on? How do the effects of creating and preserving their habitat ripple out to invertebrate health, soil balance, clean air and water? Most importantly, how can we align and be in right relationship with these powerful life givers and producers? The group will gain perspective and be inspired by what is possible in this onsite lecture by Helia’s founder and pollinator enthusiast, Bridghe McCracken. She will lead a Q and A following the class.

By the Way Berkshires is a digital magazine exploring creative life and community — art and performance, food and the outdoors — and I’m writing it for you, with local voices, because I’ve gotten to know this rich part of the world as a writer and journalist, and I want to share it with you.

If you’d like to see the website grow, you can join me for a few dollars a month, enough for a cup of coffee and a cider doughnut. Members get access to extra stories and multimedia, itineraries a bookmark tool. Let me know what you're looking for, and we’ll explore together.
