Vermont Arts Exchange (VAE) and Left Bank Gallery present a new exhibition by North Bennington artist/scientist Emma Bullock honoring environmental activists from across the country in 10 interviews and portraits.

“Going up to Alaska and taking samples on an oil field impacted me in ways I could not have anticipated,” Bullock says. “To look out at this incredible landscape, to see caribou and muskoxen and polar bears, all marred with a backdrop of oilrigs and flares. It was heartbreaking.

“While I hope that my research can help polar communities brace for the impact of climate change, I hope that my artwork and the interviews of these activists can help inspire people to take a stand against global warming before the worst comes to pass.”

Pictured above: Lisa Finley-DeVille is the president of the grassroots organization Fort Berthold Protectors of Water and Earth Rights (Fort Berthold POWER) and a community organizer on the Fort Berthold Reservation in western North Dakota. She is also a Representative in the North Dakota Legislative Branch as of 2023. The background for her portrait was inspired by Lisa’s dedication to her community and the work she has done to keep oilcompanies accountable.

Austin Ahmasuk is a Kingikmiut Iñupiaq tribal and environmental advocate from Nome, Alaska. The background of his portrait represents his lifelong commitment to preserving traditional ways of hunting and fishing.

Bullock grew up in North Bennington, always drawing and painting. She began her undergraduate studies at Haverford College, PA majoring in chemistry & German. She currently is a graduate student at MIT and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Woods Hole Mass., where she is becoming a Geochemist — researching, studying and addressing climate issues in the Arctic.

VAE’s Executive Director, Matthew Perry says, “I’ve known Emma since a she was a young girl at VAE taking classes and then moving up to teaching assistant in our art camps. She always has had a strong drive and the smarts to do anything. She basically taught herself how to draw, paint and combining this with her passion for science and making change, is truly amazing.”

These two passions of Art and Science are intimately brought together as Bullock shifts the focus from political to personal with an exhibition of portraits and interviews. These men and women from the United States are change makers, she says, for health, well-being and strong advocates for environmental justice.

The show will open January 5, with a celebration and an open Q&A with the artist and refreshments, and run through February 1. The gallery is open Monday and Friday 10 a.m. to 2pm, Wednesday 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and by chance and by appointment. Contact gallery director Rhonda Ratray at rhondaratray@gmail.com.
