I/O Fest — Volcano listening by Leilehua Lanzilotti

January 14 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Williams College's I/O New Music festival hosts a free concert at the Clark Art Institute in January.

I/O New Music presents a volcano listening experience based on music by Leilehua Lanzilotti, as dancers from the RAWdance company respond to and immerse themselves in Lanzilotti’s soundscape and the music of today.

Leilehua Lanzilotti is a native Hawaiian composer and sound artist dedicated to the arts of our time. As a “leading composer-performer” (The New York Times), Lanzilotti’s work is characterized by expansive explorations of timbre. Lanzilotti’s practice explores radical indigenous contemporaneity, integrating community engagement into the heart of projects.

I/O New Music, a contemporary music ensemble at Williams College, is directed by Matthew Gold. I/O, which stands for input/output, reflects the group’s ethos of letting lived experience bleed into their music. The ensemble is composed of musicians from the Williams College Department of Music faculty, student body, and local community, with guest artists from across the country.

Since 2004, RAWdance has transformed theaters and public spaces through performance, curation, and film. The San Francisco Chronicle has described the company as ”witty, whip-smart, and beautiful to watch.” RAWdance has been presented by Jacob’s Pillow, YBCA, The Joyce Theater, 62’ Center for Theatre and Dance, Dance St. Louis, Redflag Theater (China), Singapore Fringe Festival, and more.
