Images Cinema Online: Blackfish

June 3 - June 4

Wild Orcas surface to breath near a wooded shore. The film Blackfish takes an unflinching look at their treatment in captivity.
Blackfish / Magnolia Pictures

Images Cinema offers the film Blackfish to watch at home, telling the story of Tilikum, a performing killer whale held in captivity.

Tilikum killed several people while in captivity — unlike any orca in the wild. What happened? Director-producer Gabriela Cowperthwaite asked why. She puts together shocking footage and emotional interviews to explore the orka’s extraordinary nature, their cruel treatment in captivity, the lives and losses of the trainers and the pressures brought to bear by the multi-billion dollar sea-park industry.

This wrenching, tautly structured story challenges us to consider our relationship to nature and reveals how little humans have learned from these highly intelligent and enormously sentient fellow mammals.

On Wednesday June 3 at 8 p.m., director Gabriela Cowperthwaite will hold a Q&A. 10 percent of ticket sales from the film will benefit GiveDirectly’s COVID relief fund.

Images Online is Images Cinema’s ongoing virtual effort to bring new films to the community while the physical cinema is temporarily closed. You can watch films watched online, at home, and Images will split the cost of each online “ticket” with film distributor Magnolia Pictures, so each rental will directly help the theater weather these challenging times.
