What is Indigenous Education and the SMIL?

November 4 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

The flag of the Stockbridge Munsee Nation, the Mohican people, flies at the Mission House in Stockbridge.

Mohican elders and folk who work with the Mohican nation hold a series of talks this fall — today Dr. Sandra Barton will talk abut the Standard Model of Indigenous Learning (SMIL) that she developed and uses in teaching college courses and training workshops with the Stockbridge-Munsee Community. The SMIL is the only instructional design model designed to meet the unique needs of Native Americans but has also been used in non-Indigenous learning environments to great success.

This workshop is free, but you will need to save your space ahead, and the workshop may be held outside, so please dress accordingly for the weather. In the case of heavy rain or inclement weather the event will be held indoors. Seating will be limited and available on a first come first serve basis, you are welcome to bring your own lawn chair or blanket to sit on. Please eemail kknisley@thetrustees.org with any questions.

By the Way Berkshires is a digital magazine exploring creative life and community — art and performance, food and the outdoors — and I’m writing it for you, with local voices, because I’ve gotten to know this rich part of the world as a writer and journalist, and I want to share it with you.

If you’d like to see the website grow, you can join me for a few dollars a month, enough for a cup of coffee and a cider doughnut. Members get access to extra stories and multimedia, itineraries a bookmark tool. Let me know what you're looking for, and we’ll explore together.
