Joana Genova, violin – Faculty Recital

The Williams College Department of Music presents Joana Genova, violin, with guest Artist Willias Delony on piano. The event is free and open to all.

Joana Genova teaches and frequently performs at Williams as a member of the Williams Chamber Players and as a principal violinist with the Berkshire Symphony.

The program features Violin Sonatas of Stephen Dankner. The first on the program is the Sonata No. 2 for Violin and Piano. Ms. Genova finishes the first half with Tango Bittersweet by Fred Hersch. After a brief pause is Willis Delony’s Summer Waltz. Closing the program is Stephen Dankner’s Sonata No.1 for Violin and Piano.

Joana Genova
Bulgarian violinist Joana Genova is Assistant Professor of Violin and Director of String Activities at the University of Indianapolis, second violinist of The Indianapolis Quartet and Associate Concertmaster of Carmel Symphony (Indiana).

She is co-founder and Artistic Director of Taconic Music in Manchester (Vermont) and has been serving as Artist Associate at Williams College and principal second violinist of Berkshire Symphony Orchestra since 2007.

Joana began playing violin at age 6, made her solo debut at 12 with the Plovdiv Chamber Orchestra, and is a prizewinner of Bulgaria’s National Competition. She earned her Bachelor of Music at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and her Master’s in chamber music at the Rotterdam Conservatory in the Netherlands before moving to the United States in 2000 where she joined Brooklyn Philharmonic and was free-lancing in NYC.

Former teachers include Boyanka Shopova, Alexander Spirov, Peter Brunt, Ilya Grubert and Samuel Thaviu. In Holland, Joana was concertmaster of Amsterdam Bach Consort and a member of Amsterdam Sinfonietta.

Joana has been guest soloist with Adelphi Chamber Orchestra, Harlem Chamber Players, Metropolitan, Rockaway, Danbury and Berkshire Symphonies, Manchester Festival Orchestra, Yonkers Philharmonic, UIndy Chamber Orchestra, and most recently, under the baton of Maestro Raymond Leppard.

Her collaborations include performances with the Shanghai Quartet, Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio, Horszowski Trio, Enso Quartet, members of the Lark Quartet, Toby Appel, Andrés Cárdenes, Carmit Zori, Nathaniel Rosen, Michael Haber, Danwen Jiang, Austin Hartman, Renee Jolles, Michael Rudiakov, Tom Landschoot, Sophie Shao, Jon Klibonoff, Ruth Laredo, Davide Cabassi, Drew Petersen, Todd Palmer, Atar Arad, Eric Kim, Soyeon Lee and David Krakauer, among others.

Joana is a frequent guest at festivals on the East Coast, the Midwest, Wyoming, Colorado, and Arizona and has concertized internationally in Bulgaria, Holland, Germany, Italy and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

She has performed live on WQXR-Albany, Vermont Public Radio, Wish-TV, GNAT-TV, and more. CD recordings include Giannini’s Piano Quintet on MSR Classics, Frank Felice’s chamber music for voice and strings, Piazzolla’s Four Seasons and 20th century string orchestra works, among others.
