HooRWA board member and co-owner of local business Wild Soul River Justin Adkins and HooRWA ED Arianna Alexsandra Collins will lead a walk along the Hoosic River, identifying wild edible and medicinal plants and fungi.

Each month they will explore the Hoosic River Watershed and learn basic identification of edible and medicinal plants and fungi — on Third Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. from April to October, each hike in a new place. When you sign up, you will get an email with the exact meeting place a few days before the group meets.

“We will each enter this space as teacher and learner together as we learn from the plants of the ancestral homelands of the Stockbridge-Munsee Mohicans,” Adkins and Collins say. “We will also discuss what Honorable Harvest means as we live together with the plants, the river, and the land.”

The walks are given as a collaboration between by HooRWA, Offerings for Community Building and Wild Soul River.

“If we understand the Earth as just a collection of objects, then apples and the land that offers them fall outside our circle of moral consideration. We tell ourselves that we can use them however we please, because their lives don’t matter. But in a worldview that understands them as persons, their lives matter very much. Recognition of personhood does not mean that we don’t consume, but that we are accountable for the lives that we take. When we speak of the living world as kin, we also are called to act in new ways, so that when we take those lives, we must do it in such a way that brings honor to the life that is taken and honor to the ones receiving it.

The canon of indigenous principles that govern the exchange of life for life is known as the Honorable Harvest. They are “rules” of sorts that govern our taking, so that the world is as rich for the seventh generation as it is for us.”

By the Way Berkshires is a digital magazine exploring creative life and community — art and performance, food and the outdoors — and I’m writing it for you, with local voices, because I’ve gotten to know this rich part of the world as a writer and journalist, and I want to share it with you.

If you’d like to see the website grow, you can join me for a few dollars a month, enough for a cup of coffee and a cider doughnut. Members get access to extra stories and multimedia, itineraries a bookmark tool. Let me know what you're looking for, and we’ll explore together.
