We Are Still Here: Northeastern Indigenous Peoples

September 8 @ 10:30 am

The gardens show mellow fall color on a blustery September Day at Hancock Shaker Village.

Shakers and Native peoples in the Northeast shared some similar cultural values and practices, the Village suggests – integrated agricultural practices, wide cultivation and use of medicinal herbs, sophisticated basketry, equality among women and men, and the use of music and dance to enhance religious experience.

On this walking tour, Hancock Shaker Village will share newly researched understandings of the ways in which the Shakers interacted with Native peoples and where their cultural practices intersected.

This tour is part of OLLI’s University Days and Housatonic Heritage fall walks. Walking tours are free and open to the public, but you will need to save your space ahead.

Admission to Hancock Shaker Village is not included with the tour, and anyone who would like to stay and tour Hancock Shaker Village more extensively can get their own regular admission tickets afterward.

By the Way Berkshires is a digital magazine exploring creative life and community — art and performance, food and the outdoors — and I’m writing it for you, with local voices, because I’ve gotten to know this rich part of the world as a writer and journalist, and I want to share it with you.

If you’d like to see the website grow, you can join me for a few dollars a month, enough for a cup of coffee and a cider doughnut. Members get access to extra stories and multimedia, itineraries a bookmark tool. Let me know what you're looking for, and we’ll explore together.
