Kazuki Yamada conducts an Open Rehearsal of Mendelssohn and Berlioz with pianists Lucas and Arthur Jussen in the Koussevitzky Music Shed.

Felix Mendelssohn — Concerto in E for two pianos and orchestra

Berlioz — Symphonie fantastique

On December 9, 1832, Hector Berlioz won the heart of his beloved Harriet Smithson, whom he had never met, with a concert including the Symphonie fantastique, for which she had unknowingly served as inspiration when the composer fell hopelessly in love with her some years before.

Kazuki Yamada is Designate Chief Conductor and Artistic Advisor of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO), a role he commences in spring 2023, building upon the deep musical bond formed with players during his time as Principal Guest Conductor of the orchestra.

Alongside his commitments in Birmingham, Yamada is also Artistic and Music Director of Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo. Having already worked with the two organisations in partnership, conducting collaborative performances of Mendelssohn’s “Elijah” in Monaco in 2019, Yamada’s new appointment sees a continuing link forged between Monaco and Birmingham, with the CBSO Chorus set for a return to Monaco in 2023 for a performance of Orff’s “Carmina Burana”.

Time spent under the close supervision of Seiji Ozawa served to underline the importance of what Kazuki Yamada calls his “Japanese feeling” for classical music. Born in 1979 in Kanagawa, Japan, he continues to work and perform in Japan every season with NHK Symphony Orchestra and in his position as Principal Guest Conductor with Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra.

Shortly after assuming his position in Birmingham, Yamada will give a series of concerts on tour around Japan with the CBSO in summer 2023.

Lucas and Arthur Jussen

Dutch brothers Lucas (26) and Arthur Jussen (23) have been part of the international concert world for years and are praised by both press and audiences.

The Jussen brothers have performed with orchestras such as The Philadelphia Orchestra, Concertgebouworkest, Danish National Symphony Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, as well as Dallas, Vancouver, Sydney and Shanghai Symphony Orchestras. They collaborated with conductors such as Stéphane Denève, Valery Gergiev, Sir Neville Marriner, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Jukka-Pekka Saraste and Jaap van Zweden.

Highlights of the 19/20 season include their debut at the Salzburg Festival with the Mozarteumorchester and Adam Fischer as well as the season opening concert with Boston Symphony Orchestra and Andris Nelsons. The brothers also appear at the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York and perform with the Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal at the Festival de Lanaudière for the first time in summer 2019.

Lucas and Arthur Jussen can also be seen this season with orchestras including Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Münchner Philharmoniker, Orquestra Sinfónica de Galicia, Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, Berner Symphonieorchester and Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as on their Asia tour to Japan and Singapore in November 2019.

Further highlights include a cycle of Beethoven piano concertos performed with the Camerata Salzburg in Rotterdam in March 2020, followed by a tour featuring the Bach double piano concertos with the Amsterdam Sinfonietta.

In recitals, the duo performs in venues such as the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, Tonhalle Zürich, Wigmore Hall London, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Festspielhaus Baden-Baden and at the Schubertiade in Schwarzenberg. As ‘Junge Wilde’ of theKonzerthaus Dortmund, the Jussen brothers will perform a variety of programmes at the Konzerthaus Dortmund over three seasons.
