A collective of formerly incarcerated women and theater artists are co-creating an original theater piece, working together through 2nd Street organization in Pittsfield and theater makers Sara Katzoff and Amy Brentano.
“Release works towards humanizing the overwhelming statistics of racial and gender inequity present ‘behind the wall,’ (and beyond it),” Katzoff says, “while shining a light on many nonlinear journeys of healing and resilience. The piece is woven together from words, dreams and stories shared through several months of interviews and listening sessions and will be performed by an ensemble of professional actors.”
She and Brentano have shaped the script, inspired by the words, stories and dreams of Kristen Acetta, Tiffany Broulette, Katelynn Goodwin, Kripaula (Mimi) Nicholson, Gabby Leon and Vivian Singh, and performed and developed in collaboration with Zurie Adams, Noh Bailey, Joan Coombs, Laura Standley and Brittany Nicholson.
Release will have three free work in progress public performances at Berkshire Community College in Pittsfield, each followed by a post show conversation with the creatives and 2nd Street community — Monday, September 25 at 7 p.m. and Tuesday, September 26 at 2 and 7 p.m. No tickets or reservations required, and all are welcome.
