Summer Book Club: Invisible Cities
August 28 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Join Clark staff and fellow book lovers for lively discussions of three novels related to our summer exhibitions. Gertrude Stein’s The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas (June 26) immerses the reader in the Paris art world of the early twentieth century, portraying artists featured in Renoir: The Body, The Senses. Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse (July 31) resonates with Ida O’Keeffe: Escaping Georgia’s Shadow in exploring the thematic potential of the lighthouse and the struggles of female painters of the era. Finally, in Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities (August 28), the enchantments of imagined cities that share qualities of Venice are enumerated, providing a rich setting against which to consider works exhibited in Art’s Biggest Stage: Collecting the Venice Biennale, 2007–2019.
Space is limited and reservations are required. Reservations can be made beginning one month before each meeting. Books will be available for purchase in the Museum Store.
