Berkshire Scenic Railway is running holiday historic train rides — the Tinseliner offers a 1950s family Christmas train ride with a visit from Santa, a layover at the PopCares Tree Lot to pick a tree for pick up later, and hot cocoa and roasted marshmallows.

Tinseliner train rides will run on weekends from November 27 to December 19, and on the Friday after Thanksgiving family at 1, 3:30 and 6 p.m. For adults, the Mistletoe and Martinis cabaret train also runs at 6 p.m. on Saturdays December 4 to 18.

All of these rides run on the Hoosac Valley Line between Adams and North Adams in a classic 1955 Budd RDC or self-propelled passenger car. The train ride includes narration about the history of rail here, and on some train rides volunteers will share their own knowledge.

The trains set out from 5 Hoosac St., Adams, with parking at the Adams Visitors Center at 3 Hoosac St. Trains are running on Saturday and Sunday through October, and the ride lasts an hour to an hour and a half.

The train does not go through the Hoosac Tunnel — the railway tunnel through the mountains to the east, still one of the longest in the world — because it is an active freight rail corridor, and because riding through it would show you 15 minutes of solid darkness, but the train ride will talk about the historical significance of the tunnel to the region and the nearby Western Gateway Heritage State Park Visitors Center has excellent exhibits that explore the tunnel’s significance.

Passengers will need to arrive at least 10 minutes before the train sets out, and Federal regulations require passengers wear masks for the whole of the experience. You can get tickets online to save you and your group seats on the train. You will still need to check-in at the ticket office when you arrive at the train station on the day of the ride, before boarding the train.

(You can bring your own food and drink along for the ride. The train is authentically historic, and so it has no restroom — the Budd RDC was originally equipped with direct drop toilets, and they are not environmentally sound now. You can find restrooms in the Adams Visitors Center.)
