Sacred Way at Canoe Meadows

Golden rod has swamped Canoe Meadows. On a muggy evening last week I came to the Mass Audubon sanctuary on Holmes Road in Pittsfield (you’ll see the signs on Route 7 south of downtown) to take a quiet walk along the river. The boardwalk is overgrown, the cat tails are thriving, and the milkweek looks almost ready to split. The air smells of honey. Summer is easing into fall.
