In celebration of National Poetry Month, awardwinning novelist Lara Tupper will lead a free haiku workshop, reading verses that pay close attention to the natural world, and the group will try their hand at the three-line form.

Start a writing habit you can stick with and enjoy in this fun, supportive workshop and take away easy prompts for a future inspiration. No previous experience necessary. All adults are welcome to attend. Please bring a notebook and a pen.

Space will be limited. Please pre-register by emailing merka@chatham.k12.ny.us

Lara Tupper is the author of three books: Amphibians, a short story collection (Leapfrog Global Fiction Award winner; Leapfrog Press, 2021), Off Island, a fictional re-imagining of Paul Gauguin’s travels (finalist, Housatonic Book Award; Encircle, 2020) and A Thousand and One Nights (Harcourt and Untreed Reads, 2015), an autobiographical novel about singers at sea.

With filmmaker Greg Eismin she co-wrote the screenplay adaptation for A Thousand and One Nights. Her recent fiction was a finalist for the 2022 Nicholas Schaffner Award for Music In Literature, the 2022 UNO Press Publishing Lab and the 2021 Orison Books Fiction Prize.

A graduate of the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College, she taught at Rutgers University for many years and now presents writing workshops via Swift Ink Stories, a platform for creative expression. She is also a jazz/folk singer who has traveled the world; her latest album is This Dance.

By the Way Berkshires is a digital magazine exploring creative life and community — art and performance, food and the outdoors — and I’m writing it for you, with local voices, because I’ve gotten to know this rich part of the world as a writer and journalist, and I want to share it with you.

If you’d like to see the website grow, you can join me for a few dollars a month, enough for a cup of coffee and a cider doughnut. Members get access to extra stories and multimedia, itineraries a bookmark tool. Let me know what you're looking for, and we’ll explore together.
