Nationally acclaimed songwriter, guitarist and vocalist Jill Sobule will join Boston folk icon Ellis Paul in concert at the Egremont Barn.

Denver-born songwriter/guitarist/singer Jill Sobule has released a dozen of albums spanning three decades of recording, tackling such topics as the death penalty, the French Resistance, LGBTQ issues, reproduction and the Christian Right, to name a few – with her trademark wit and aplomb.

While her songs cover expansive thematic ground, she says, they are portrait and story songs about human beings, real and imagined, which let her step back from the issues they tackle and to relate to them as she would to a close friend.

On stage, she entertains, amuses, provokes, she says, and more often than not, takes her audiences on an emotional roller coaster, from comedy to pathos in a few bars of music, often within the same song.

She has performed with Neil Young, Billy Bragg, Steve Earle, Cyndi Lauper, Tom Morello, Warren Zevon, and John Doe. She inducted Neil Diamond into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame. She has shared billing with Don Henley, Joe Jackson, Warren Zevon, the influential LA punk band X, and Lloyd Cole & The Negatives. She regularly co-stars with comedian/actress/author/SNL alumni Julia Sweeney in their Jill & Julia Show, an unusual and mesmerizing combination of song and storytelling. A road warrior, she plays more than 100 shows a year.

In November of 2019 Jill sang a song as herself on an episode of the Simpsons. Jill’s latest project is her New York Times Critics pick, Drama Desk nominated autobiographical musical “Fuck 7th Grade” which premiered at the Wild Project in 2022; had a remount in the Winter of 2023; and will be back November 2023.

Born in the potato farming country of upstate Maine, Ellis Paul launched into the 1990s Boston folk scene at the time, a cohort that included Patty Griffin, Patty Larkin, Vance Gilbert, Dar Williams, and Martin Sexton. He has deepended his craft across generations and across the country, from the East Coast to Big Sur, Okemah to Homer, Alaska, from hardscrabble rustbelt towns to peachy Georgia.

From the emotionally charged, sophisticated Americana of “Plastic Soldiers” and “Kick Out the Lights (Johnny Cash)” from Chasing Beauty, to the abject pathos of “I Ain’t No Jesus,” the metaphysical heartbreak of “The Innocence and the Afterlife” and the hilariously unreliable narration of “4th of July,” all from The Storyteller’s Suitcase, Paul turns his attention to midlife reflections on 55.

His 22nd and latest album, 55 (2023), culminates a string of recent releases stretching back at least as far as Chasing Beauty (2014) and The Storyteller’s Suitcase (2019)

In this latest suite of songs he examines who and where he is, checking the pulse of an exhausted, post-COVID nation in the process, and further refines his storytelling craft.
