Associate professor of Geosciences José Constantine will present A Journey Through the Historical Impacts and Modern Challenges that Face Tropical River Ecosystems for the fourth talk in the spring 2024 Faculty Lecture Series.

Tropical forests, teeming with more than half of the planet’s species, and the vital rivers that weave through them, stand at the forefront of deforestation crises. These ecosystems are not just global centers of biodiversity, but also where some of the most devastating cases of environmental injustice unfolds. Despite significant advances in our understanding of the widespread repercussions of habitat loss, a pressing question lingers: What role should academia play in combating these injustices? From our bucolic setting, we’ll explore how we, as a community, can actively participate in this global dialogue.

José Antonio Constantine, an associate professor of Geosciences and geomorphologist, explores the evolution and environmental functioning of riverscapes. Collaborating with colleagues from Africana Studies, Environmental Studies, and Chemistry, he also explores the capacity for science to support environmental justice, backed by the National Science Foundation and the Natural Environment Research Council.
